"The Virtual Pulpit - a place to think" is a new section on the website which brings together sermons and comment which may interest a wider audience. An important addition has been a set of notes on the Bible which are based on the session which Richard Lawry and Colin Ashworth ran at the end of last year. New material will be added as it becomes available. Visit the site by clicking here.

family fun day2009/06/19 Thank you from Richard and Brenda Lawry
Thank you all so much for the wonderful send-off you gave us on 31 May.  It was a day we will never forget.  It wasn’t easy for us (as you will have noticed!) to say goodbye to you all, but the sadness of the day was balanced with such a sense of love and even celebration.  The gifts you gave us were just marvellous, and we were deeply touched not just by your generosity but by your thoughtfulness.  The blessing which the children sang for us at the end of the service was so moving, and their presentation too.  And the wonderful shared lunch and the Whit Walks in the afternoon made the whole day particularly memorable.....more

2009/05/21 Confirmation 28th June

This year’s Confirmation Service will be on Sunday 28th June, at 10.30am, at St Paul’s.  Bp Robert, the Bishop of Stockport, will be here to conduct the service, which is always a very special occasion, not just for the candidates, but for the whole church.

This year there are 6 candidates from our congregation going forward for confirmation: 2 adults (Donna Jones and Paul Smith) and 4 children (Emma Clark, Hannah Leech, Tristan Manchester and Rebecca Stone).

Again we shall be sharing our service with St Mary’s, Newton, and possibly another church.  So it will be lovely to have the opportunity also to welcome friends from other churches.

Please pray for our candidates at this important time for them.

2009/04/12 Restoration Update

The restoration work on the tower (and high-level stone-work) is due to start on 20 April. This is the penultimate phase of the restoration programme for St Paul’s.  The work is due to take between 2 and 3 months, and although the tower will be scaffolded, we will still be able to access the building through the west door as usual, and we are told it should provide no special restrictions on church use.

The final phase of the programme will be the south transept and organ chamber, which may happen next year.

We had some financial good news recently when the Historic Cheshire Churches Preservation Trust gave us a very generous grant of £10,000.   We now have a significant proportion of the money needed for the remaining work, and so the light can be glimpsed at the end of the tunnel.  With one last push, we shall be in position to complete the restoration of St Paul’s.  When all the work is done, it will be good for everyone to be able to concentrate on normal maintenance rather than restoration.

Thank you again for all your generosity in this process – please keep up the good work.

2009/04/12 Lunchtime concert
The next in what we hope will be a continuing series of lunch-time concerts is on Tuesday 5th May.  Once again, students from Chetham’s School of Music, accompanied by Brenda Blewett (aka Lawry!) will come and give a varied programme in a one-hour recital at church (1.00-2.00pm).  There is also an optional soup & sandwich lunch available from 12.00 onwards.  Please note that the church will not be opened until 12.00, so that the performers can practise without interruption.

No advance ticket purchase necessary (pay on the door), but further information can be obtained from Stuart Steels on 01457-832698
2009/04/09 Usage of the website
There were 12909 visitors to St Paul's website in the year ending March 2009. This compares with 6868 visitors in the year ending January 2008 (the last time we compiled an annual figure) - an 87.9% increase.

2009/03/13 Annual Church Meeting - 26 April

Our Annual Meeting will be on Sunday 26 April, at 11.30am, following a shorter than usual Morning Prayer service at 10.30. Do join us if you’re able. This is the meeting at which we elect churchwardens, PCC members and others, and when we look back over the year just ended, and look forward to the year ahead. (All those on the church Electoral Roll are elegible to vote.)

The church Electoral Roll is the official list of church members, and we update it regularly, and especially before the Annual Meeting. Please do add your name to the list, if you’re not already on it. Any baptised person who lives in the parish, or who lives outside the parish but has been attending worship regularly here for 6 months, is entitled to appear on the roll. It’s an important record, but also a significant sign of belonging. All you have to do is sign a very simple form, which you can get from our Electoral Roll Officer (Eileen Frith – 304-9926) or from Richard Lawry, or from the table just inside church.

For any of you who are not able to be there at the Annual Meeting, Jacqui is once again kindly collating a booklet of reports from all the groups active in church, giving an overview of activities over the last 12 months, so do pick up a copy or ask someone to bring you one if you’re house-bound.

Richard.

2009/03/13 Rose Queen

Congratulations to Lauren Parkinson, who will be St Paul’s next Rose Queen.  Also to her retinue, which (as at the time of writing) will be: Alarna Leech, Hannah Jones, Rebecca Jones, Isobel Bate & Eleanor Bate.  Lauren will take over in July from Freya Clark, who is carrying out the role so well this year.  Perhaps I could also take this opportunity to thank Sue Clark and all the Retinue mums (and dads!) for their hard work this year in arranging events, services and fund-raising.
Richard.

2009/02/15 Amnesty International
The inaugural meeting of our group supporting the work of the international human rights organisation, Amnesty International, took place at the vicarage on Thursday 5th February. We have already got our own mascot, as Jack Millin brought along a small model for a sculpture (I've since discovered that this is called a "maquette") which was created in 1953 by one of this country's most distinguished sculptors, Elizabeth Frink (now a Dame), for a competition on the theme of The Unknown Political Prisoner. Richard began by explaining the work and current campaigns of Amnesty, which is not affiliated to any political party or religious group. We then spent the rest of the evening creating cards to send to people imprisoned in various countries because of their political or religious beliefs, or as a result of miscarriages of justice, and writing letters to politicians in those countries expressing our concerns about the prisoners' plight. We prayed that we might bring comfort and encouragement to the detainees and give the politicians cause to reconsider their policies.

We intend to meet every couple of months and you are very welcome to join us, whether or not you responded to Richard's initial invitation. The next meeting will be at "Woodside", Old Road, on Thursday 2nd April, starting at 7.30pm.   Steve Willis

2009/02/15 Archdeacon

It will be a pleasure to welcome our archdeacon, Richard Gillings, to St Paul’s on 8th March.  Archdeacon Richard is coming to preach and preside at the 10.30 Communion Service on that day, and I know he is looking forward to joining us, and meeting people here again.

2009/02/15 Mothering Sunday

Do join us for our annual Mothering Sunday Service on 22 March.  It’s a good service to bring friends or relatives to, with its heritage of people regathering in the mother church, and it being a day to focus also on relationships.  And of course, being a Parade Service as well, with the children staying in throughout, it’s an ideal service for people to bring their kids to – and for any daffodil lovers!

2009/02/15 Lent Course

In recent years, during Lent, we have joined together with members from St James’, Millbrook and All Saints, to share a Lent Course.  The purpose of this is to set aside a little time, during this important season of preparation, to explore aspects of faith and spirituality, and to grow in our understanding and discipleship.

This year we will be looking together at “The Passion”, the dramatisation of the events of the last phase of Jesus’ life, which was made and shown by the BBC during Holy Week last year.  I saw most of it then, and I thought the series was excellent – very engaging and thought-provoking.  It has been re-published as a package for church groups.  We will watch the 4 episodes, over the course of 4 weekly meetings, and then use the resources provided to help us to discuss in small grouups the events described and their portrayal in this version.  We hope it will prove to be a stimulating preparation for Holy Week & Easter.

The sessions will be at St James’ Church in Millbrook, on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm, beginning on 10th March.  All are very welcome to join us, and I would warmly recommend this course as part of your pre-Easter diet!  Feel free to come to some of the sessions, even if you can’t make them all.  And if you’re housebound, or otherwise prevented from attending, perhaps you might like to offer a prayer on Tuesday evenings for our churches, for those attending the course, and for all of us, that we might grow in our understanding of the mystery of the cross, and God’s redemption of the world.

Richard.

2009/02/15 Electoral Roll

Are you on the Electoral Roll of St Paul’s?

The church electoral roll is the official list of church members, and we update it regularly, and especially before the church’s Annual Meeting in April.  Please do add your name to the list, if you’re not already on it.  Last year (as is the case every 6 years) a completely new roll had to be drawn up, and it may well be that you missed the opportunity to have your name included.  Any baptised person who lives in the parish, or who lives outside the parish but has been attending worship regularly here for 6 months, is entitled to appear on the roll.  It’s an important record, but also a significant sign of belonging.  All you have to do is sign a very simple form, which you can get from our Electoral Roll Officer (Eileen Frith – 304-9926) or from Richard Lawry, or from the table in church.

2009/02/8 Annual Report

This needs to be available in advance of the Annual Meeting (26 April, 2009) so the deadline for articles is 1 March. If you lead any church group, activity or committee (including any group which regularly meets here) please submit a short report to Jacqui Barker (stpaulst56@sky.com or in the Magazine box in the porch).

2009/02/8 Confirmation

The Bishop of Stockport will be here at St Paul's to conduct this year's Confirmation Service on Sunday 28th June. Any adults or children aged 13 and upwards who would like to be confirmed into full membership of the Church (or who would ike to know more about what's involved) please have a word with Richard. There will be preparation sessions on Wednesday evenings from 22 Apnl to 13 May.

Do please contact Richard Lawry if you’d like to sign up for Confirmation or would just like to talk about the possibility.  It’s a staging-post where people make public statements of belief in God, confirming the promises made for them at baptism, and of their resolve to follow Jesus.  In doing so they become full members of the Church, and are strengthened by God’s Holy Spirit for the Christian life.  And it’s a great celebration in the life of the church.

2009/02/8 Lent Book

The book I’m recommending for reading during Lent this year is called “Journeying through Lent with Mark”, and is a series of short daily meditations on a verse or two from Mark’s gospel.  It’s a slim volume, costing just £3.99, and would be a good thing for busy people!  It’s a good way to commit to a little Bible reading and prayer time during the 40 days of Lent, even if you feel that available time is at a premium!

Copies are available from the bookstall in church, after services.  If you would like a copy, but can’t get to church, please phone Cicely on 339-3409 or Richard Lawry on 338-2514.

2009/02/8 Lent Course

For our joint Lent Course this year, we're going to be showing and discussing "The Passion" - the highly acclaimed 4-episode drama screened last year, focussing on the last days of Jesus' life. Tuesday evenings, starting 10 March, at St James' Church, Millbrook.

2009/01/13 Ash Wednesday - February 25
Please note that this Ash Wednesday (February 25) the evening service at 7.30pm will be held at All Saints, Micklehurst, with whom we will be sharing the service.

Ash Wednesday is a significant day in the church year, marking the beginning of the period of Lent, a penitential season during which we prepare for the great and joyful festival of Easter! Many people find the Ash Wednesday service very meaningful, as we share Communion, and (if desired) receive the mark of the cross in ash, to remind ourselves of our mortality and sinfulness. Do make a point, if you can, of coming to that service – it’s the best way to start Lent and deepen your experience of the journey through this season.

2009/01/13 Amnesty
We are starting a new Amnesty Group here at St Paul’s, to support the work of Amnesty International, the global human rights organisation.

We’ll be meeting for the first time on Thursday 5 February, at 7.30pm. This first meeting will be at the vicarage, although subsequently the group will meet at Steve & Judith Willis’ house.

We will meet approximately every 2 months, to share news, respond to campaigns, and especially to write letters or emails to prisoners of conscience or those unjustly prisoned under oppressive regimes.
There are half a dozen or so who have already said they want to be part of the group, and who will coming along. Please do contact me, or just turn up on 5th February, if you would like to join in too. There’ll be time for a cup of tea and a chat as well!
Richard

2009/01/13 Prayer Chapel
By the time you read this, our Prayer Chapel should have all its new elements in place. We decided to enhance the Memorial Chapel to make it a place where people might be encouraged to use it more widely for general prayer.

An anonymous donation was used to buy three new chairs for the chapel, and a beautiful table has been provided too. On the table we have placed a lovely wooden cross which has been hand-carved and anonymously donated in memory of a loved one. All of this complements the votive candle stand introduced recently, and the memorial book cabinet and other existing features. Thank you to all those who have generously contributed to the improvements of various sorts.

Do use the chapel – go in and sit, pray, light a candle, and so on – whenever the church is open. Perhaps you may want to come early before a service, or stay afterwards for some quiet moments.
There are prayer request cards, which you can fill in if there is someone or something you would like us to pray for. There is a small basket to place the cards in, and they will be brought up to the altar table during Healing Services, and added to the prayers.

2009/01/04 All change
The Vicar of St Paul's, Richard Lawry, today announced that he would be moving to a new post within the Chester diocese - at Norbury, in Stockport. He anticipates that he will leave St Paul's in June 2009.
2008/11/16 Alpha
Our next Alpha Course starts in January, and the list has already opened!

Alpha, as many of you are aware, is a one-evening-a-week, 10-week course, offering a chance to explore (or re-discover) elements of the Christian faith, to chat about them in a relaxed and informal environment, and ask some of the questions we all inevitably have. Each evening consists of a meal, a DVD presentation on a particular theme, and group discussion time. It’s a chance to learn, discuss, and make new friends along the way. My calculations are that nearly 100 people have now done Alpha at St Paul’s – both long-standing church members and new contacts.

Our Alpha Course will again run on Wednesday evenings (7.15-9.30pm), beginning on 14 January 2009. The course is open to any interested adults – existing church members, baptism parents, marriage couples, those considering confirmation, or people who’ve never had any contact with St Paul’s at all - anyone is welcome! Please consider it for yourself, and in particular, do think about inviting a friend along who may appreciate an informal, friendly way into church.

Forms will be available in church (or from me direct), giving information on the content of the course, and how it works. Or for more information, please ring me on 338-2514.

Thank you.

Richard
2008/11/16 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 18 - 25 January 2009
This important week spans the days from 18-25 January, and we always mark the Sunday of the Week of Prayer with a united service with the other churches in Stalybridge. This time, our service will be at St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, at 6.30pm, on 18 January, the very start of the week.
Please do make a special effort to attend, and celebrate our unity with our brothers and sisters in the town.
